COURSE SYLLABUS
Welcome to English 11! I am pleased to have you in my class and look forward to our ADVENTURE as we explore the English language together. Remember, it is language that makes man unique. This year we will be studying all aspects of our language: literature, writing, speaking and listening. Because we will be dealing with language we will also be dealing with thoughts, feelings, and opinions, therefore, YOUR GRADE will be based on your participation and cooperation during classroom activities as well as on tests, quizzes, and exercises.
GRADING POLICY:
94 – 100% A 80 - 83 B- 67 - 69 D+
90 - 93 A- 77 - 79 C+ 64 - 66 D
87 - 89 B+ 74 - 76 C 60 - 63 D-
84 – 86 B 70 - 73 C- below 60
The following areas will be considered when determining your grade:
Reading/Writing Assignments 40%
Tests & Quizzes 30%
Daily Work 20%
Participation/Cooperation 10%
Your "Participation/Cooperation" grade is based on your performance in the following areas:
-Promptness - "Be on time"
-On-Task - "Do what your instructed to do"
-Respect - "Treat everyone in the room with respect"
-Effort - "Never settle for less than your best"
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
1. Literature - Throughout the year you will be studying a variety of literature. Major titles that we will be reading include: To Kill a Mockingbird, Glencoe Literature: Course 6:American Literature, & Fahrenheit 451. During 4th quarter you will choose a book to read with 4-5 other students, after completing the reading your group will prepare a presentation on the novel for class. Finally all students will be required to read a minimum of one novel each quarter and complete a book report.
2. Public Speaking - Imbedded in the English 11 curriculum is a public speaking unit. You will be delivering four speeches during the year. Possibilities include but are not limited to: speeches of introduction, impromptu speeches, persuasive speeches, commemorative speeches and informative speeches.
3. Writing - We will be doing a variety of writing exercises this year including essays, speeches, and journals .
4. Vocabulary/Grammar – There will be weekly vocabulary and grammar assignments and quizzes. Additional vocabulary assignments will be drawn from the stories we read in class and from your independent reading.
ASSIGNMENTS:
You must hand in all assignments on the due date. All late assignments will be reduced 10% for each day they are late. If you miss school on the day an assignment is due you must hand in the assignment on the day you return to class.
MAKE-UP WORK:
Any missed tests or quizzes are YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. You must see me outside of class time to arrange a time to make up missed tests or quizzes. I am available before school from 7:30-8:00 am, during my 1st period prep, 7th period study hall, and after school until 3:30 pm.
***NO MAKE-UP WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER IT IS ONE WEEK LATE.
***MAKE-UP WORK WILL NOT BE DISCUSSED DURING CLASS TIME.
